Architects see bedrooms in a unique light. They aren’t just rooms; they’re sanctuaries within our homes—the very soul of the dwelling. It’s where we unwind, recharge, and dream. Good architects understand this and approach bedroom design with a fresh perspective.

Here’s my take on the most critical elements to consider when designing bedrooms in multi-family units! I'll be adding examples from Toronto of what I think is an excellent exemplification for each principle.

1. Breathe Easy with Operable Windows

Imagine fresh air flowing through your home! Operable windows empower residents to control their ventilation, enhancing air quality and overall comfort. Look at Riverside Square in Toronto, where thoughtfully placed operable windows improve cross-ventilation and livability.

2. Let the Light In

The right window size and placement can flood your room with natural light while minimizing energy loss. The Cork town Condos in Toronto exemplify this beautifully, with expansive windows that brighten the space while remaining energy-efficient.

3. Stay Comfortable Year-Round

Want to enjoy the warmth without sacrificing light? Low-E coatings do just that! The Arbour in Toronto features triple-glazed windows that provide excellent insulation without compromising those stunning city views.

4. Shade Your Space Right

Effective shading is a game changer! At The Well, retractable shades allow residents to maintain comfort and privacy while effectively managing sunlight throughout the day.

5. Think About Material Choices

Consider materials that help regulate temperature naturally! The X2 Condos in Toronto utilize concrete walls to create a more comfortable living environment throughout the year.

I've created an on-demand class called How to Start Your Building Permit The Most Efficient Way!.
Even though it talks mainly about fast building permit approvals, it is much related to two issues: innovative thinking before starting the project, and how it can expedite your building approval time, and secondly the importance of engaging the architect in zoning reviews (and the importance of zoning reviews).
